The White House, York

This Grade II listed building was originally a coaching inn but has been a house since the early 19th Century. Ferrey and Mennim were asked to continue the building’s evolution to provide a new breakfast room, two additional bedrooms and an enlarged master bedroom with en-suite. This took place as two phases that we carefully coordinated with the clients. The new garden room extension was designed to increase access and visibility to the newly landscaped garden. There are now views along the length of the garden and a fully glazed, opening wall to make connection with nature and allow the house to change with the seasons. The existing house retained its original natural light as we carefully positioned rooflights above the existing windows. Our attention to detail was noted when the White House was the York Design Awards Winner 2010 with the judges remarking: “The careful and contextual detailing, the consideration of views of the original house, the quality and appropriateness of the landscape architecture and, in particular, the way they all come together as a unified design make this an exceptional example of its kind.”
