The Dutch House, York

The Dutch House was designed in 1955 by Dutch architect Jan Van Erven Doren. The original owners wanted to have a Dutch style house complete with sweeping, steeply pitched tiled roofs, deep overhanging eaves and eye-brow dormer windows. Ferrey and Mennim were appointed by the current owners to provide a new bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor. The house is not listed but lies within a conservation area. We chose to continue the distinctive Dutch detailing as the original house to maintain its distinctive character. This included challenging the roofers with a new, distinctive eye-brow dormer window constructed using plain tiled detailing matching the originals. The high-quality materials, with durable detailing, such as the discrete stainless steel standing seam roofed canopy, should ensure that the new work gradually ages in the same way and with the same grace as the original house.
