Ferrey and Mennim’s experience and specialism in historic bridge repair led to us being appointed to repair the Kexby Old Bridge. This grade II* listed bridge was built in 1650 and until the 1970s carried the main road from York to Hull on its three large, rounded, triple-chamfered stone arches.
The frequent flooding of the River Derwent had slowly led to the deterioration of the bridge. This included the scouring of the abutments and piers and extensive damage and loss of stones on the upstream side of the underside of the arches.
We carried out careful investigation to understand the historic bridge construction followed by the individual identification of works to each stone block. The difficulties of access and carrying out the works required temporary support of the stone arches using a piled steel structure to allow the replacement of the damaged, large blocks of fine magnesian limestone.
