Camden Centre for Learning, London

Camden Centre for Learning (KS2) is a keystage 2 SEN school for students with social and emotional behavioural difficulties (SEBD). Unusually it is a combined education provision, social services, and NHS facility to provide joined up care for students and allow the staff to adapt the provision swiftly to students individual needs. We had to coordinate the client’s wide ranging set of requirements and from them create a highly specialised yet affordable brief. The users wanted a building that felt like a school, but which was strong and secure enough to protect students and staff. We restored and adapted the Victorian school and designed two large contemporary extensions. This was carried out with extensive consultation with staff and students, local residents and the neighbouring primary school. Construction had to take place on a very tight site and without blocking the primary access route to the neighbouring ambulance station. CCfL was undertaken by Ian Hayton as project architect whilst at Architype Architects. Photographs shown are by Dennis Gilbert. The project was shortlisted for the 2015 Architects’ Journal Retrofit Award.
